Women chose to have a home visit for a variety of reasons. Some women are having a normal breastfeeding experience, while other may be experiencing difficulties. All home visits are tailored to each individual families needs. Through a health history, visual assessment, and one on one support, together we can develop goals that address your individual situation. Each family I work with has a variety of different needs that we can address to improve your transition from pregnant to parenting.
I help mothers with a variety of basic breastfeeding questions, and have special expertise to help with more significant, complicated issues. Issues that I have helped families through include: sore nipples, breast pain or tenderness, mastitis, low or over milk supply, poor latch, premature babies, multiples, and a variety of other breastfeeding challenges. Home visits will consist of an assessment of both mom and baby, their breastfeeding experience, weight check, personalized care plan, and referral to physician if needed. Upon request, a progress report will be sent to all care providers involved with the family to ensure continuity of care. The goal the visit is for you to have a plan to address your specific situation, and to gain additional confidence in your natural ability to feed your baby.
Benefits of the Home Visit
Follow-up BF Consultation is any visit after your initial consultation. Some women will only need one visit from a Registered Lactation Consultant; however some families need additional home visits. Some breastfeeding issues require further follow-up and more support. Follow-up visits can be scheduled anytime during your nursing experience. Even mothers having a “normal” breastfeeding experience can benefit from a home visit. Topics I have helped families with, in addition to breastfeeding complications, include: feeding habits and routines, teething, advancing solids, immunizations, safety, infant massage, baby-led bottle feeding, and age appropriate play. I provide information and education for moms on topics including: returning to work, pumping, breastmilk storage and collection, talking to your employer, supplementation, birth control, women’s health issues, and weaning.
This home visit is for women who are returning back to work and need information about breastfeeding and returning to work. We will discuss your breastfeeding and pumping schedules, talk about potential barriers, and together develop a plan to address your situation. I can help you set up your pump and assess a pumping session. We will discuss breastmilk storage and collection. Many moms enjoy is one-on-one consultation as it allows time for all your questions to be answered.
I offer a home visit for women struggling with low-milk supply. This home visit would consist of a conversation about your specific breastfeeding schedule and/or pumping routine. We will discuss several techniques that have worked for other moms to develop a plan specific to you. I will assess a pumping session to assure pump is working well and the parts fit appropriately and answer any questions.
This home visit will consist of basic breastfeeding information including: when to start, how often to nurse, colostrum, newborn cues, positioning, engorgement, latching, breast milk storage and collection, pumping, and basic breastfeeding skills. This home visit is most useful if scheduled during the 3rd trimester after 34 weeks. Breastfeeding education is provided through handouts, visual aids, a short video, and personalized support.
This is a unique home visit is for mothers who are needing education about weaning. We may choose to wean at any stage of breastfeeding. Some women are forced to wean for various reasons. Weaning can be a challenging time for many women, there are both physical and emotional aspects to weaning and I have many tips that can help you develop a plan to make weaning as smooth as possible.
*mileage included within Sedgwick County, I do provided services to outlying communities for an additional mileage fee, please call to discuss.
(Length: Approximately 30-45min)
This has proven to be a valuable consultation for my moms who live to far for a home visit. Although some breastfeeding questions are best addressed in person, many can be answered via Skype. The video feed can allow me to see positioning and latch, along with a breasts assessment if necessary. Moms have found this consultation more personal and helpful than a phone call.
