Many women that are interested in herbal products are concerned about their milk supply or are trying to increase their current milk supply.  Solving the underlying problems of low milk supply is just as important as treating the symptom.  

Keep in mind the more milk you remove the more milk you will make!  This means nursing our babies often and if you are separated from your baby expressing your milk.  Hand expression has been a long used method of a mother expressing her milk.  Others may have a breast pump they are using to express their milk.  There is good information about tips of hand expressing and pumping on www.kellymom.com. 

Herbal supplements are not a magic pill!  Herbal supplements have helped women increase their milk supply, however the women that address the underlying low-milk supply issues are the most successful.  I will be asking you about your situation to help avoid common pit falls.    

A home visit is available for moms with low-milk supply that need help.  This home visit consists of a conversation about your specific breastfeeding schedule and/or pumping routine.  We will discuss several techniques that have worked for other moms to develop a plan specific plan of care for you.  I will assess a pumping session to assure pump is working well and the parts fit appropriately and answer any questions.

Low-Milk Supply Consultation:  $45

 In addition to nursing, expressing, and speaking with a lactation consultant,  there are traditional foods that can increase you milk supply including:

• Fruits:  Bananas, black currants, mango, grapes, pears, peaches and apples
• Raw vegetables:  carrots, pea, and watercress.
• Nuts: walnuts, almonds, and cashews
• Seeds: sunflower sesame, flax, celery, caraway, fenugreek, and fennel.

If you are nursing or expressing often and are still struggling with a low-milk supply herbals can be a safe, effective option for many women.  Although this is often a safe, effective intervention, being knowledgeable about what you are taking and why is important.  Keep in mind herbal products lack the double blind placebo controlled studies that the FDA requires of medications.  Things to keep in mind.

• Any medication or herbal product you take for the first time, you must watch for allergic reactions.
• Be sure to consider any underlying medical conditions, especially high blood pressure and diabetes.  Discuss this with your Doctor or Certified Lactation Consultant (LC) prior to starting herbs.   
• If you are any herbal products for lactation or any other problem you must let you Doctor and LC know.  Some medications are contraindicated with specific herbals.
• Educate yourself on the herbal products and the companies that distribute them.
• If you have questions about the herbal products you are taking call your Doctor or a Certified Lactation Consultant.

 How Do I Get the Herbs?

I keep all of the listed products in stock and I have 3 ways of distribution.  

1. Wednesdays are currently free delivery day, I will deliver within Sedgwick Co for free.  
2. I will deliver on non-delivery day for a $5.00 delivery fee.
3. Many families will arrange a time they can stop by my home and pick-up the herb.  Pick-ups are schedule at both parties convenience.
